WHO WE ARE
Coded Cloth is modern folklore, re-fashioning the past since 2020. It expresses founder Emma Reichenbach’s passion for vintage and antique costume and textiles, collage, patchwork and embroidery spanning the historic to the contemporary.
Inspired by traditional costume from the utilitarian French farmers' smock, to the ornate decadent beauty of Eastern European ceremonial clothing, Coded Cloth offers a range of one-of-a-kind garments, unconstrained by the concept of ‘seasons’. Their relaxed, versatile shapes and simple silhouettes allow for freedom of movement whilst showcasing the intricacies of their precious fabrics.
Each unique garment is expertly made in England, combining vintage, often handmade, never to be replicated, fabrics and textiles that include 1920s cotton lace, 1930s embroidered linens, 1940s rayon bedspreads and satin ball gowns, 1950s Japanese damask and 1960s jacquards and metallic brocades. All elements are chosen for their rarity, quality and condition. These internationally sourced textiles are skillfully collaged and placed, then beautifully finished to create bespoke contemporary unisex fashion that is made to endure and is as beautiful on the inside as the outside.
Coded Cloth is for people who value craftsmanship, quality and are sensitive to the human stories woven into the very fabric of vintage textiles. Each garment honours the skills, labour and dedication required to create embroidery by hand, as manifestations of human endeavour, ritual and celebration from the 20th Century, transfigured into original 21st Century heirlooms of beauty and distinction.
Each garment encodes a unique story. Each garment will inspire you to write your own.
