Modern Folklore - Odessa, is inspired by traditional costume, from the utilitarian French farmers' smock, to the ornate decadent beauty of Eastern European ceremonial clothing. The desire to adorn ourselves is intrinsic to the human condition: with this in mind, Coded Cloth, Story 1, is a celebration of colour, texture and embroidery that references ritual, dance, and tradition: national costumes, rites of passage, and a sense of cultural belonging. Modern Folklore- Odessa- offers one-of-a-kind long and short dresses, and peplum tops, collaging unique combinations of hand embroidered vintage fabrics in relaxed, versatile shapes and simple silhouettes that allow for freedom of movement, whilst showcasing the intricacies of their precious fabrics.

Rich, layered, joyful colour collides with the slubby tones of dusty denim, smoky pink and cold khaki, mixed with a little neon disruption. This collection is borne out of a desire to create contemporary fashion for women who value craftsmanship, quality and are sensitive to the human stories woven into the fabric of vintage textiles. Each garment honours the skills, labour and dedication required to create embroidery by hand, as manifestations of human endeavour from the 20th Century, transfigured into original, one-off 21st Century heirlooms of beauty and distinction. Each garment encodes a unique story. Each garment will inspire you to write your own. To view collection influences click here
