Modern Folklore - San Diego, is inspired by the workout revolution that took hold in the US, its most memorable protagonist, Jane Fonda, and her iconic workout book from 1982, inspiring brothers and sisters to ‘get physical’ and dress in ‘his ‘n hers’ leotards, leg warmers and tracksuits that eschewed fixed notions of ‘feminine’ or ‘masculine’. Lycra was the liberating fibre, when manmade still spelt progress. How we’ve moved on!
Deborah Turbeville’s ‘Bathhouse’ photographs from 1975, dance scenes from Guadagnino’s 2018 Suspiria, warmups and cool downs, damp brows and languid post-workout poses all lay a foundation for a collection of sweatshirts that acknowledges that ‘athleisure’ is here to stay. Coded Cloth sweatshirts combine our desire for comfort and versatility. They do this through the use of luxurious vintage Savile Row pinstripes spliced with textural, unique vintage embroidered linens. They nurture our need for individuality amid a sea of conformity.
Coded Cloth is where utility and the unique combine. Building on the sweatshirt shapes introduced in Story 2, ‘The City’, and ‘The Sea’, Story 3 adds ‘The Plains’. Fluid, breathable natural fibres contrast with panels of cross stitch embroidery, distilled into modern folklore. A fresh subversive interpretation. Made to dance in.
